Spotlight on Recent Patents

Our client NovaVision, Inc., based in Boca Raton, FL, develops technology to treat patients whose vision has been damaged by stroke, degenerative disease, or accident.  We obtained U.S. Patent No. 7,367,671 for a vision restoration therapy that transmits increasingly challenging visual stimulation to areas of the patient’s vision that are undamaged, as the patient’s vision improves.

The therapy is individualized and can be carried out on the patient's home computer.  The schematic illustrates the sending of target stimuli (TS1, TS2) to different portions of the visual field, including to the intact zone (I) and to the transition zone (TZ), which adjoins the blind zone (B).

The patent was based on an application that was initially filed under the Patent Convention Treaty, a strategy that has the effect of streamlining the process of obtaining protection in multiple countries.
