Below is a listing of upcoming and recent engagements. Upcoming Presentations Lee Bromberg will chair a Breakfast Roundtable discussion on Avoiding US Litigation Traps at the World Intellectual Property Congress of the AIPPI at the Boston Convention Center in September 2008. Recent Presentations Karen Buchanan spoke at the Intellectual Property Law Conference 2008, on June 18, 2008. She addressed "Declaratory Judgment Actions: What should potential licensees do in light of MedImmune v. Genentech, SanDish v. STMicroelectronics, and Teva v. Novartis?" Edward Dailey and Courtney Quish spoke at the Intellectual Property Law Conference 2008, on June 18, 2008. They addressed "Damages in Lanham Act Cases: Proving deception and causation, knocking down the damages barrier, and chronicling The HipSaver Company Inc v. J.T.Posey Company, 497 F. Supp. 3d 96 (D. Mass. 2007)." Tim Murphy Chaired MCLE's 11th Annual Intelluctual Property Law Conference 2008 on June 18, 2008. Nicole Rizzo Smith was on a BPLA panel at Suffolk Law School on April 1, 2008 discussing "Careers in Intellectual Property." She joined other attorneys to discuss careers and experiences practicing in the IP field. On March 18, 2008, Meredith Ainbinder was a panelist at the Boston College Law School Intellectual Property and Technology Forum's Annual Career Panel, providing law students advice about starting a career in intellectual property law. Barbara Carter hosted an MCLE event entitled "Current Trends in Biotech Law and Practice" on February 6, 2008 in Boston. John LeGuyader, a Bio-Tech Group Director for Technology Center 1600 at the USPTO, was the guest speaker and his talk was entitled "Post KSR USPTO Guidelines." Lee Bromberg joined Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Justice Botsford, United States District Court Judge Saylor, Superior Court Judges Fabricant and Gants, and others in a panel discussion, "Confidentiality and Impoundment: The Challenges They Present" at Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education on February 11, 2008. Lisa Tittemore was a speaker at the Boston Bar Association's Intellectual Property Year in Review. She spoke on key federal court trademark decisions in 2007. Yakov Sidorin co-chaired a conference entitled "Integrated Optics: Devices, Material and Technologies XII" at the SPIE Phontonics West sysposum in San Jose, California. At that same conference he also chaired a session entitled "Integration Concepts." Lee Bromberg chaired the Boston IP Cases Task Force of the Boston Patent Law Association this past fall. Robert Asher presented "Sophisticated Use of Reexamination and Reissue" to the patent group of Corning Incorporated at its offices in New York in October, 2007. William J. Morris III gave a presentation at Franklin Pierce Law Center entitled "A Day in the Life of a Trademark/Entertainment Lawyer -- What It Is Really Like to Practice in These Fields" on October 26, 2007. Bruce Sunstein was a guest speaker at a day-long conference: "New Media and the Marketplace of Ideas" on October 26, 2007 on the Boston University campus. Jay Sandvos spoke to the MIT Alumni Club of Maine on October 25, 2007. Bruce Sunstein spoke at the IDSA Boston chapter meeting on October 4, 2007. The event took place in the auditorium at Wentworth Institute of Technology. Bruce discussed patents in relationship to the design community. Lee Bromberg and Board Member Pamela Bromberg attended the Silver Jubilee Gala of the Boston Chamber Music Society on September 30, 2007 at Jordan Hall, New England Conservatory. Bruce Sunstein spoke on September 25, 2007 at a Boston Patent Law Association Seminar: "Rule Changes for Continued Examination and Claims Practice." Steven Saunders co-chaired an MCLE program entitled "Hot Topics in Intellectual Property for the Business Lawyer" on September 11, 2007 at the MCLE Conference Center. Lisa Tittemore and co-chair Eileen Herlihy moderated a Boston Bar Association CLE program on June 7, 2007, entitled "U.S. Supreme Court 2006-2007: Active Battleground for Patent Law. Recent Cases Before the Court." The program provided an in-depth analysis of important patent law cases before the Supreme Court this year by some of Boston’s most experienced patent practitioners, including Bruce Sunstein, spoke on "Medimmune, Inc. v. Genentech, Inc. and licensee estoppel." On June 13, 2007, Lisa Tittemore spoke on "Copyright and User Generated Content" as a faculty member of the MCLE "Intellectual Property Law Conference 2007" at the MCLE Conference Center. On May 10, 2007, Lisa Tittemore moderated a panel of experienced patent litigators on "Litigation Strategies and Tactics" as part of the Spring Meeting of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) at the Seaport Hotel and World Trade Center in Boston. The panel included discussion of topics such as "trolling" for a friendly forum, patent reexamination as tactical matter, leveraging foreign counterpart activity, and logistics in multi-party litigation. Julia Huston moderated a roundtable discussion of false advertising cases at the annual meeting of the International Trademark Association in Chicago on April 29, 2007. Lisa Fleming co-chaired a panel discussion on April 25, 2007 entitled "Litigating Closely-Held Corporation Disputes in Massachusetts" at the Boston Bar Association Conference Center. Justin Bernold was a panelist on the program. Erik Belt was a guest speaker at the Boston Patent Law Association luncheon on April 25, 2007. He was part of a four-person panel addressing the topic "Licensing after Medimmune: A Discussion of Pitfalls and Opportunities." Julia Huston discussed opportunities available to women and minority lawyers on April 24, 2007 at the John Adams Courthouse in Boston. The program was sponsored by the National Association of Women Judges, and co-sponsored by the Women's Bar Association of Massachusetts and Bromberg & Sunstein LLP. Julia Huston spoke at a breakfast seminar entitled "Women in the Courtroom: Addressing the Challenges Facing Women as Litigators" on March 15, 2007, at Suffolk University Law School. Other panelists included Attorney General Martha Coakley and Chief Justice Barbara J. Rouse of the Massachusetts Superior Court. Barbara Carter chaired a program for the MCLE on "Cutting Edge Biotech Law and Practice" on February 7, 2007 at MCLE Conference Center, Boston. Lee Bromberg and Erik Belt discussed intellectual property on Law Line, a show hosted by Attorney BJ Krintzman on NEW TV, the Newton local cable TV channel (channel 10 in the Newton cable line-up). The interview ran numerous times during the month of February. Robert Asher spoke at the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) Mid-Winter Institute in New Orleans on January 24-27, 2007. He discussed "Hot Topics in Patent Litigation," including injunctive relief and reexaminations. Past Presentations Robert O'Reilly, our Litigation Support Specialist, shared tips on gathering, processing, reviewing and producing electronic information on November 30, 2006 at the Boston Bar Association. He was part of a presentation entitled "Update on Electronic Discovery." Lee Bromberg addressed the Annual Meeting of the Boston Patent Law Association as their incoming President in Boston on December 6, 2006. Julia Huston spoke at a panel discussion sponsored by the Women's Bar Association, entitled "It's Reigning Women: Top Women Rainmakers and Executives Building Successful Practices." The event was held on December 7, 2006 at Edwards, Angell, Palmer & Dodge LLP. William J. Morris III gave a presentation at Franklin Pierce Law Center entitled "A Day in the Life of a Trademark/Entertainment Lawyer -- What It Is Really Like to Practice in These Fields." The presentation took place on Tuesday, November 7, 2006. Julia Huston spoke about the proposed changes to the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board rules and recent legislative developments at the annual Boston Patent Law Association "Trademark Year in Review" on October 26, 2006. William J. Morris III gave a presentation to the Boston Bar Association on the topic of trademark law on October 18, 2006. Bruce Sunstein spoke at the AIPLA 2006 Annual Meeting, October 19-21, 2006 in Washington, D.C. He presented a paper entitled "Harnessing Collaborative Web Based Technology To Bring Prior Art to the Patent Process - An Inventor's Perspective." Julia Huston chaired the "Annual MCLE Intellectual Property Conference" at the MCLE Conference Center in Boston on June 7, 2006. The program addressed a variety of topics of interest to intermediate and advanced intellectual property attorneys, and was sponsored by Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc. Lee Bromberg spoke at the American Intellectual Property Law Association Spring Meeting in Chicago on May 4, 2006, on the topic of "Managing and Financing Patent Infringement Litigation." Lee Bromberg spoke at the Boston Bar Association on May 9, 2006 on "Arbitration vs. Litigation of Intellectual Property Disputes." Julia Huston moderated the Third Annual "State of the Courts" address on April 18, 2006 at the Boston Bar Association, featuring The Honorable Margaret H. Marshall, The Honorable Cynthia J. Cohen, The Honorable James F. McHugh, and The Honorable Barbara J. Rouse. John Stickevers co-chaired a seminar on patent valuation on March 16, 2006 at the Boston Patent Law Association. On March 10, 2006, Tim Murphy, Maureen Toohey, Rebecca Hanovice, and Courtney Quish acted as judges for students competing in AIPLA's Giles S. Rich Moot Court Competition. The semifinal rounds were held at the Suffolk Law School. The competition concerned a hypothetical appeal to the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals by an individual inventor whose frisbee-like device was found to infringe a patent held by a large toy company. Barbara Carter spoke at the Albany Law School Journal of Science & Technology Symposium on Pharmaceuticals and The Internet, on March 2, 2006. She discussed "The Internet's Impact on Fixed Dose Combination Drugs" as part of a panel on "Counterfeit Pharmaceuticals." Barbara Carter was the featured speaker at the Boston Bar Association Life Sciences Committee's January 30, 2006 meeting. She discussed the growing emphasis on enablement and utility requirements in patent prosecution, in a talk entitled "Hot Topics in Biotechnology." Lisa Tittemore was the Chair of the MCLE "Copyright Basics Plus!" seminar on January 18, 2006, at the MCLE Conference Center in Boston. The seminar featured five presentations by experienced IP practitioners and covered topics from "what copyright protects" to "strategies for the protection of computer software" and "copyright litigation basics". Julia Huston was featured discussing intellectual property law on "America's Most Influential Women In Government, Technology, Business, and the Law." The show is produced by Forbes Business, and was broadcast on American Airlines flights in January 2006. Lisa Tittemore was Co-Chair of a "standing room only" symposium entitled "The U.S. Patent System: Working or Broken and Who Decides?" on November 16, 2005, at the Boston Bar Association, 16 Beacon Street, Boston (co-sponsored by the Boston Patent Law Association). A distinguished panel of speakers, including Lee Bromberg, Dr. Adam Jaffe, Sacha Pfeiffer of the Boston Globe, Dr. Robert Rines, James Toupin, General Counsel of the USPTO, and Jack Turner of MIT, discussed recent criticisms of the U.S. patent system and debated whether it is |
